BIOGRAPHY

Yosuke Sugawara is a photographer and visual artist based in Tokyo, whose practice moves between documentary impulse and the deliberate construction of ambiguity. His work resists easy categorization, occupying a space where the indexical nature of photography is simultaneously trusted and interrogated.

Central to his recent work is an interest in surfaces that mediate rather than record—materials that receive light, distort it, and return something unfamiliar. Mirrors, water, metallic films, and fogged glass recur throughout his images not as subjects but as conditions.

Sugawara trained in Tokyo before undertaking extended periods of independent study in Europe, where sustained encounters with painting and printmaking deepened his understanding of mark, surface, and the trace.

His images are rarely made quickly. A single project may accumulate over months or years, with the final selection often determined less by narrative coherence than by a felt sense of formal rightness.

He has exhibited widely across Japan and internationally, with solo presentations in Tokyo, Osaka, Berlin, and Amsterdam. His work is held in private collections in Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
